Literary fiction in English
Hamzeh Naghdi is an Australian novelist. He writes literary fiction in English, a language he came to as an adult. Born in Iran, he began studying English literature in 2012 after moving to Australia, and chose it as the language of his fiction. He writes full-time in Canberra.
His novels stay close to their characters — to what they do and remember, what they conceal, and what they leave unsaid. The question at the centre of the work has been with him since childhood: how a human life can be understood.
He began writing at ten. Over the decades that followed, while working as a graphic designer and then as a calligrapher, he continued to write, and by his forties the novel had become his principal work. Several novels accumulated in his archive; for years he revised them rather than publish them. He is now bringing ten of them to publication, one at a time, editing each as an independent work.

D-Dyla.n is set in Cowell, an oyster town on Franklin Harbour, South Australia, and is told in the first person by Dylan, a stammering twenty-five-year-old who lives with his grandmother and keeps his accounts in his head. The novel follows his latest scheme, twenty-two green stones, through a town that has seen his ventures before. It is a tragicomedy of small sums and one thing left uncounted.
